This Privacy Policy explains how Laten Cecil ("I," "me," or "we") collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you visit latencecil.com (the "site") or sign up for the newsletter. This is a simple, static website: it runs no advertising, no analytics, and sets no tracking cookies.

Information I collect

The only personal information collected is:

  • Your email address — only if you choose to sign up for the newsletter.
  • Basic technical data — like your IP address and browser type, which my hosting provider records automatically in server logs to deliver and secure the site. This is standard for any website.
  • Newsletter engagement — if you subscribe, my email provider records whether you open the emails and click the links in them. This helps me understand what's useful and improve future updates. It applies only to the newsletter, not to browsing the site.

I do not ask for your name, and I do not collect payment information — books are sold through third-party retailers (such as Amazon), whose own policies govern those purchases.

How I use it

  • To send you occasional newsletter updates about my books and releases, which you agreed to receive when you subscribed.
  • To see how the newsletter is doing — using opens and clicks — so I can make future updates more relevant.
  • To operate, secure, and maintain the website.

I will never sell or rent your information, and I won't use it for anything beyond what's described here.

Legal basis (for EU/UK visitors)

If you are in the EU or UK, I rely on your consent to send you the newsletter (you can withdraw it any time), and on mylegitimate interest in running a secure website for the basic technical data described above.

Who I share it with

I don't sell your data or share it for advertising. I use two trusted service providers to run the site and the newsletter, and your information is processed by them only for that purpose:

  • Kit (email newsletter) — stores your email address and delivers the newsletter. See Kit's privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare (website hosting and security) — serves the site and processes technical data such as IP addresses. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

I may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of others.

Cookies and tracking

This site sets no tracking or advertising cookies and uses no analytics. Because there's nothing to consent to, there's no cookie banner.

Saved on your device

A few features remember things using your browser's local storage. This stays on your device — it's never sent to me or anyone else, and I can't see it. It's used only for:

  • Your theme choice — if you switch to the darker theme on the accessibility page.
  • Your place in interactive stories — so you can pick up where you left off, along with which endings you've found.
  • What a story remembers for the next one — some interactive stories in a series remember a choice you made, such as a friend you made or something you found, so a later story can mention it.

"Start over" in an interactive story resets your place, but not what a series remembers. To remove everything, clear this site's data in your browser settings.

How long I keep it

I keep your email address for as long as you're subscribed to the newsletter. When you unsubscribe — every email includes an unsubscribe link — your address is removed. Server logs held by my hosting provider are retained only for a short period as part of their normal operation.

How I protect your information

I take reasonable measures to keep your information safe, and I rely on established providers (Kit and Cloudflare) whose systems are built to protect it. Still, no method of transmission or storage online is ever completely secure, so I can't guarantee absolute security.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the EU/UK GDPR or the California CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal information I hold about you, to withdraw consent, or to object to its use. To exercise any of these, just email me at contact@latencecil.com and I'll respond. I do not sell personal information.

Children's privacy

This site is not directed at children under 16, and I do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes to this policy

I may update this policy from time to time. When I do, I'll revise the "last updated" date above.
