Accessibility

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Accessibility matters to me personally. I'm dyslexic, and I write novels meant to be easy to fall into for readers of every level — so it would be strange for the website about those books to shut anyone out. I want this site to be usable by as many people as possible, including those who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, or a magnified display.

What I aim for

I aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, the widely used standard for accessible websites.

What's in place

  • Structure screen readers can follow — semantic HTML, proper headings, and landmarks, with a "skip to content" link.
  • Full keyboard support — everything works without a mouse, and the focused item is always clearly outlined.
  • Readable colour contrast — text meets the WCAG AA contrast ratio against its background.
  • Text that scales — the layout uses relative sizes, so zooming or increasing your browser's text size doesn't break it.
  • Descriptive alternative text for meaningful images, such as book covers.
  • Respect for motion preferences — if your device is set to reduce motion, animations and smooth scrolling are turned off.
  • Interactive stories that work for everyone — choices are ordinary buttons you can reach by keyboard, and after each choice focus moves to the new passage so screen readers carry on reading. These stories need JavaScript to play; the rest of the site works without it.
  • No pop-ups or autoplaying media, and no third-party tracking scripts to get in your way.

Ongoing work

Accessibility is never quite "finished." I test the site as it grows and fix issues as I find them. If something here falls short of the standard above, I'd genuinely like to know so I can put it right.

Tell me about a problem

If you run into a barrier using this site — anything that's hard to read, navigate, or operate — please email me at contact@latencecil.com. Let me know the page and what happened, and I'll do my best to fix it and to help you get what you needed in the meantime.
