Somewhere near the edge of the deep dark, a crack in the stone opens into a vast, wet, green room. Water runs everywhere. Pale columns of light fall from cracks far overhead. In the middle stands what looks like a hill, blanketed in moss, with a spiral of brown and pale gold showing through the green.

The hill is Noot. He is a snail, generations old and far larger than anyone who comes to see him. He has stayed in that cavern so long that it has grown around him. Water runs down the curves of his shell, and small creatures nest where it meets the stone. When he looks at you, two long stalks rise and turn their dark eyes on you, both at once.

He is one of the very few left on the Wall who still carry the Thread, though he calls it by an older name: the Thallus. The Rooks have never managed to take it from him. He is far too big to carry off, and when he chooses, he simply draws back into his shell, which nothing can pry open.

Noot does not hurry. He carries each thought through to its end before he starts the next, and visitors find themselves slowing down to match him. He answers what he is asked, plainly, and not much more. He finds small, quick people endlessly interesting. They live so fast.

People come to him when they need something, and he gives what he can. He never asks them to stay.
