The Kingdom of Highwall
Atop A Wall · Book 1
The greatest city on the Wall, built at the top of a long climb beside a light that never goes out.
Dawnward of Briar, the Wall climbs, step after step, and at the top of all that climbing sits Highwall. It is the largest city anyone knows of, spread across three whole sections of the Wall, each one higher than the last.
Beside it stands the Evermoon. It is a light like the sun, except that it never rises and never sets. It does not dim at evening or brighten at dawn. It only shines. Newcomers find that unsettling before they find it beautiful, and the city keeps its own day by two halves it calls dim and bright.
The lowest tier, the Ledge, is where outsiders come in: traders, wanderers, the poor, the unwelcome. The middle tier, the Ward, is all markets and crafts and crowds. At the top, in the brightest light, is the Luminary, where the Velouri rule from among their flower gardens.
Highwall is the peak of the climb. Past it, the Wall falls away, down toward the dark.
